I also believe that the media representations of the presidential campaign are full of sexism and racism. But that is clearly not surprising. Nor am I surprised by African Americans being skeptical of Barack Obama given his support by all those white men.

Media hatred for Hillary was so awful. And the image displayed on your website ( http://www.adonismirror.com/06052008_leader_pimpandho_primary.htm ) with this new article of yours come right from the racist & sexist imagination of this porn culture.

The fact that Obama is African-Ameriacan does not change his male-supremacist privilege over women. Sometimes, I believe that the dem supporters of Obama voted for him just because they didn’t wanna vote for a woman.

Rightly enough, I’ve always thought the same thing about Flynt’s shooting.

I’m a very uncool mid-20s feminist because I loved Hillary for all the reasons that personally matter to me. I’m also supposedly part of the latte-loving crowd - I live on the East Coast, am moving to Europe with my European partner, drive a vintage Mercedes, and have a graduate degree (doesn’t matter I have poverty-level income - I get lumped with the yippie liberals instead of progressives because of my location and education). But I don’t (never have?) fit in with sex-positive feminists who run the currently popular blogs and claim we’re beyond voting based on gender (which has almost never been my reasoning - except maybe in my much-younger youth - for liking Senator Clinton). I wish I could articulate how much this post resonates with me and voices how angry I am, continue to be, for all of these very valid reasons.

Rich, great article - as always… But if you wanted to articulate your thoughts with more examples - nothing could exemplify your arguments more than “Obama Girl”… the creation of a ‘ho’ by a white producer, Ben Relles http://www.barelypolitical.com/page/about-us for ‘the pimp’ - Obama.

Of course now - he’s gone on to create a whole series of ‘hoes’ with Mccain girl… in one youtube clip they show her kissing another woman, show them ripping her shirt to look more provocative…

Good post. I have to try to remember that my main anger is with the media and many of Obama’s supporters. Both Obama and Clinton’s campaigns were created by the media, although Obama was certainly the one to profit from it, and could have done more about opposing it. It’s hard to turn away from being on the winning side.

Awesome essay.
If only we could get that kind of feminist mobilization (though obviously not to the point of self mutilation)today. I wonder if all that was going on in 70’s and early 80’s is true - women protesting stores, movies, kids tearing up porn shops.
I completely sympathize with Christenson, too.It boggles my mind how ’sexism’ throws every woman’s life so far from everything that it could be. Even us seemingly privileged women can be obliterated of any meaning of Self by our trashy abusive culture and religions. I know what that pain and anger is like - to literally have your life’s potential torn away from you, and in the aftermath to smile and forget all about it, ignore the unfairness, you have only yourself to blame, and work to make sure everyone else, oh those future generations get the nominal benefits that you were denied, shit that you don’t even care about because you’re only angry for the basic right to your own damn self that was denied you, you are angry for yourself and that is a big no-no. A big inner voice to fight.

There is an immense bravery that comes from brokenness, but without support it often manifests itself tragically. I hope she is well and strong somewhere.
